The Magic of Sleeping Anywhere

Written by Ruth on Monday 27 July 2020

Welcome to a week of uncertainty, particularly so in terms of sleeping arrangements. We've played dumb while camping in places plastered with "No Camping" signs (and we've had a good telling off for doing so...), we've slept covertly behind a shopping centre, we've also surprised poor folk calmly sleeping at home in the dead of night and enjoyed the hospitality of friends of friends that have taken us in like family.

Monday 20 July 2020 - Bozeman (Wild camping): 60 km

Ruth having a morning coffee by the river Instead of starting the week with a "good morning and happy Monday" we started it with a telling off for camping where we really shouldn't have been, but once the tent was down enjoyed one of the best breakfasts of the trip. A lovely coffee watching the river flowing downstream. Well, the target for the day was to make it to the town of Bozeman and try and sort out an extension to our visas, as it had been badly delayed and was causing us some stress being practically illegals. To get there we had two options. The more direct route, that we'd been told was the most dangerous road in the country, and the other, to traverse unknown dirt roads and crawl over high mountains to reach our destination. We chose the first since we were in a real rush to tick off some tasks and couldn't afford many more delays. The rest of the team ventured into the unknown... We ended up having a really productive day in which we sorted out the visas and Rob managed to pick up a replacement to his lost camera. And for the others a day they labelled "BBD: Backcountry Bullshit Day" where they had to navigate a labyrinth of never ending crappy roads destroyed by winter avalanches. While we enjoyed the afternoon under the shade of a bushy tree in the town park, the guys pedalled and pedalled without even making it to Bozeman by the time evening came. The town, however, was special since Addie had lived there and still have a multitude of friend about. So we'd planned to spend the night with one of them without making a plan B. But when we gave up on the arrival of the others we got onto figuring out a place to camp. With all the campsites full we instead headed round the back of a shopping centre which appeared to be a place people in cars spent the night... In all honesty it wasn't ideal and so we slipped into our sleeping bags praying that no one would disturb us in anyway, and thankfully they didn't.

Tuesday 21 July 2020 - Addie's Old House, Bozeman (Hosted): 4 km

We didn't stick around our camping spot for long and instead headed for a sports shop that had a picnic table outside with plug sockets. Here we got back in touch with the rest of the team and met up again. Hearing about their battles from the day before we headed to the park we'd been in the day before and weirdly didn't move from there for the remainder of the day. Well, that's not quite true since we spent the afternoon playing musical chairs with the shadow of the tree moving around throughout the day. It was another night of having little clue about where we were to sleep until Addie managed to find us a place in her old house, although her friend there was out at the time so we ended up ringing the doorbell at 11pm and surprising one of the other housemates! Well, we just collapsed onto the massive sofa there and watched a famous anime cartoon called "Avatar" which everyone seemed to be really into.

Wednesday 22 July 2020 - Addie's Old House, Bozeman (Hosted): 0 km

Rob reading a book in the garage of Addie's old home As we all gradually woke up, we gathered just outside the garage so as not to annoy the people in the house (as we didn't really know who was there or what they did yet). It was here we had the pleasure of meeting Emily, one of Addie's ex-housemates who offered us the chance of spend the afternoon at a nearby river to cool off. The other guys accepted but Rob and I decided to stay and get up to date with blogs and things. It was however time to have a treat, so when everyone got back we went out to eat at a pizza place where we tucked into the best combo ever; beers and pizza. We also had the honor of meeting Emily's boyfriend Andrew, who surprised us massively by paying the bill for everyone! After sharing tales over dinner we returned home where Emily sang us some of her own songs with her guitar and ukulele (to find out more you'll have to listen to this week's brilliant audiolog!) What an amazing night, good music and a good old cup of tea.

Thursday 23 July 2020 - Addie's Old House, Bozeman (Hosted): 0 km

The team resting in the shade of a tree in the park There had been plenty of talk in camp about having a pizza party, with Rob as the head chef, and where better than in a house with an oven and people willing to eat! After a productive day, including some adjustment to the bikes, we got into it by needing the dough. Everything was going well, some of Addie's friend popped over and the beers were flowing but just as we were going to put the pizzas in the oven... Bam! one of them hit the deck and all the toppings scattered the floor... After rushing to sort out the mess and a quick trip to the shops to replace the missing ingredients the magic really began and we could finally enjoy a spectacular home made pizza or three. When we were finishing, Addie's friend Sierra, who had let us stay in the first place, rocked up so we could spend a little time with her and her man to get to know them a little better. Thanks so much for having us over in your lovely home!

Friday 24 July 2020 - Missouri Headwaters State Park Campground (Hosted): 48 km

After a few nights at the house it was time to move on, so once up and about we gathered our things and got ready to leave. Rob and I had to do some audiolog recordings, so we headed to our favourite park to get that done. And not long later the team shows up to agree on a plan for the rest of the day. They were off on a hike up a mountain with Addie's friends and we carried on with our stuff. After editing the audiolog and picking up provisions at the supermarket we headed towards our next destination, a nearby campsite where Jacob was waiting for us with a shit ton of minced alpaca meat. Although it's sometimes hard to get back on the road after a long break, once you get going it feels like normal in no time. The hikers arrived late on in a friend's, Tiffany's, car and we spent the evening all together.

Saturday 25 July 2020 - Galena Gulch Campground (Camping): 84 km

Ruth stroking a group of horses by the road We had a long day of crossing wheat fields ahead of us, in which grasshoppers and the blazing sun were to take centre stage. The only interaction we had with people all this time was a big family of 15 or so who overtook us on quad bikes on their day out in the countryside. When we finally arrived in the small town of Boulder we met up with the team outside the grocery store. Where we also met half the town! First a guy that claimed to talk to ghosts and spirits told us his story and all about his, slightly dark, hobbies. We also met the supermarket owner, a wonderful lady that offered us water and even cash that, by way of unanimous agreement, went straight into the Aerobility fundraising kitty!

Sunday 26 July 2020 - Aiden's Mum's House, East Helena (Hosted): 56 km

The team in Aiden's house playing the ukulele Once more we had to decide upon our route, we had the option of the most challenging and technical section of the great divide route or the somewhat easier option of the back roads towards the capitol of Montana, Helena. Jacob took the first option, the brave man he is, but the rest of us mere mortals decided to go easy on ourselves and also enjoy an all you can eat buffet breakfast for $10 we'd heard about. It was totally worth it. After a few hours of pedalling we reached Helena where Aiden's mother (a friend of Addie) was waiting for our arrival in her home with open arms! She had some delicious nibbles waiting for us, with salad and fresh fruit, followed by a sushi dinner which we made short work of. We spend the evening listening to Bernadette playing the violin, learning how to plait (sorry Americans, "braid") hair and finishing off watching the film "Inside Out". A real pijama party, all together in an enormous bed!

We reach the end of a week full of pizza and hospitality, where we've pushed ourselves and enjoyed the rewards with the surprisingly amazing people that we cross on our way!
